Students refusing placement to schools in Nkwanta South due to conflict – Education Director

-

The Municipal Director of Education in Nkwanta South, Jonathan Korsinah, has expressed concern over the significant number of fresh Senior High School (SHS) students refusing to accept placements in schools due to ongoing conflicts in the area.

He noted a sharp decline in online registration numbers for placements, with Nkwanta South SHS seeing a drop from 41 registered BECE graduates to just 25, resulting in only 24 students officially registering.

Similarly, the Nkwanta Community Day Senior High Technical School, which initially had 190 placements, recorded only 22 registrations, despite 22 protocols being in place.

Ntruboman SHS had just 26 registrations, while Kyabobo Girls SHS managed to register only 16 students as of last week.

In an interview with Adom News, the Director of Education explained that the protracted conflict has created an environment of fear and uncertainty among parents and students, leading many to abandon their assigned placements in local SHS.

He appealed to students who received placements to attend their assigned schools, assuring them that measures have been put in place to ensure their safety.

“The security is here to protect you,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Oti Regional Minister, John Gyapong Kwadwo, expressed concern over the ongoing attacks and killings in the surrounding areas.

He mentioned plans to review the curfew hours imposed in the municipality but noted his hesitance due to the recurring violence whenever any attempts are made to relax the restrictions.

The minister urged the community to recognize the impact of the conflict on local businesses and development projects being disrupted.
