Human rights activists have called on parents, teachers, and other stakeholders to take greater responsibility in safeguarding the rights and well-being of children in society.

The appeal was made by human rights activist and Country Director of the Geneva Office of Human Rights Education, Jim Hess, during the 2025 International Human Rights Day celebration held in Kpone. The event was themed “Our Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials.”
Mr. Hess emphasised that children’s rights are fundamental to building a just and equitable society. He stressed the importance of protecting their right to education, freedom from child labor, and other basic entitlements. He urged parents to not only respect the rights of their own children but also extend the same care and protection to all children within their communities.

He noted that upholding children’s rights must go beyond policy discussions and be reflected in everyday actions, particularly in homes and schools where children’s values are shaped.

Adding to the call, Sandra Samba, Head of Guidance and Counseling at the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Education Directorate, highlighted the critical role of law enforcement agencies and relevant institutions in enforcing child protection laws.

She stressed that stronger collaboration among stakeholders is essential to ensure children are safe, empowered, and able to reach their full potential.
The event served as a reminder that protecting children’s rights is a shared responsibility and a vital foundation for national development.
