President John Dramani Mahama has announced that law students in Ghana will now be eligible to access financial support under the Student Loan Trust Fund, as part of efforts to ease the cost of legal education.

Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, President Mahama reaffirmed that education remains central to his government’s transformation agenda.

“Education remains the most powerful tool for national transformation,” he told Parliament. “In 2025, we fulfilled key promises captured in our research and education manifesto to expand access and reduce financial barriers for Ghanaian students.”

The President highlighted the success of the No-Fee Stress initiative, launched in Koforidua, revealing that more than 152,000 first-year students in public tertiary institutions have already benefited.

“So far, over 152,000 first-year students have benefited from the No-Fee Stress initiative, and we expect this number to increase to about 220,000 within this academic year,” he stated.

On legal education, President Mahama announced a major policy shift.

“In collaboration with the Student Loan Trust Fund, law students will now be included in the student loan scheme to ease the financial burden associated with legal education,” he declared.

He further disclosed that the Free Tertiary Education Policy for Persons with Disabilities has been successfully launched to promote inclusive access to higher education.

“We have also successfully launched the free tertiary education policy for persons with disabilities to ensure equitable access to higher education for all,” he added.

President Mahama stressed that these interventions reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring that no Ghanaian is denied higher education due to financial constraints.
