President John Mahama has announced that the Ministry of Health will soon issue new guidelines to eliminate the persistent “no bed syndrome” in health facilities across the country.
Delivering the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament, he stressed that patients in medical emergencies must be attended to, even under makeshift conditions, and emphasised that no patient should be turned away due to lack of beds.
To expand capacity, the President disclosed that government will implement Phase Two of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital project to increase bed space.
He also confirmed that work will continue on the La General Hospital, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital maternity and children’s block, as well as the Police and Afari Military hospitals, as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s health system.
“The Ministry of Health is expected to issue guidelines to eliminate the unacceptable ‘no bed syndrome.’ Patients facing medical emergencies must be received and assisted, even if it means doing so under makeshift conditions. No patient should be turned away from any healthcare facility they visit.
“In the meantime, the government plans to expand capacity by implementing Phase Two of the Ridge Hospital project to increase bed numbers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. We will also continue and complete the Police Hospital project, as well as the La General Hospital. In the Ashanti Region, we will finish the Sehoa Regional Hospital and Afari Military Hospital, and complete the children and maternity block at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. We remain committed to building a stronger, more resilient, and self-reliant health system for all Ghanaians,” he stated.
