Small-scale miners urged to embrace responsible and sustainable mining

A respected voice in Ghana’s small-scale mining sector, Francis Adenyo has called on miners to adopt responsible and environmentally friendly practices to ensure long-term sustainability within the industry.

He has also encouraged small-scale miners to actively monitor nearby mining operations and make land reclamation a key part of their work once extraction is completed.

According to him, such steps are vital in reducing the environmental impact of mining while promoting sustainable development in mining communities.

Addressing recent proposals for a national state of emergency to curb illegal mining, Mr. Adenyo disagreed with the idea, describing it as counterproductive.

He instead advocated for improved monitoring systems and enforcement mechanisms to identify and arrest illegal miners without penalising legitimate operators.

“What we need is stronger oversight and effective enforcement, not sweeping measures that may harm those who are working within the law,” he stated.

Mr. Adenyo also appealed to the government to recognise and support miners who are demonstrating commitment to responsible mining. He urged for policies and incentives that reward those prioritising environmental protection and reclamation.

His remarks align with ongoing national efforts to promote sustainable mining practices in Ghana.

By adopting responsible methods, he said, small-scale miners can play a crucial role in protecting the environment while contributing meaningfully to economic growth.
