Small Arms Commission warns against use of weapons in Akwatia by-election

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) has warned political parties, their supporters, and the general public that carrying any form of weapon will not be tolerated ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

In a statement, the Commission said anyone found in possession of firearms or improvised weapons—including tasers, pepper spray, knives, or machetes—will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

NACSA noted that politically motivated violence, often fueled by inflammatory rhetoric and illegal possession of arms, threatens Ghana’s peace and undermines the democratic process.

“The use of arms or threats of violence must never be tolerated as a means of gaining political advantage,” the Commission stressed, urging party leaders to encourage their supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

The Commission assured that it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service, Electoral Commission, National Security Council, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to maintain peace before, during, and after the polls.

NACSA concluded by calling on all parties to respect the rule of law and place national stability above partisan interests.
