The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has urged the Ghana Police Service to demonstrate that electoral violence will not be tolerated in the country.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Ahiagbah described as “criminal behaviour” the alleged assault on the NPP’s Third National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, during the September 2 Akwatia by-election.
He accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of resorting to intimidation tactics to influence the outcome of the poll.
According to him, although police officers were present at the scene, they failed to take immediate action.
The NPP has since petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate and prosecute NDC National Vice Chairman, Awudu Sofo Azorka, and Abuakwa North Constituency Communications Officer, Abdul Wahab Amadu, over their alleged roles in the incident.
“The law must work so that Ghanaians will trust the police and know that electoral violence has no place in our democracy,” Mr. Ahiagbah emphasised.
