Shops, offices closed in Kumasi for funeral of late Asantehemaa

All shops, offices, and markets have been closed in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly of the Ashanti Region as mourners pay their last respects to the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

Currently, the Central Business District (CBD) is extremely quiet, with all movement ceased and no commercial vehicles operating.

Today, September 18, 2025, marks the culmination of the four-day mourning period for the Asantehemaa’s burial rites, during which schools, banks, offices, and markets have all been closed.

The Manhyia Palace has been the focal point of solemn tradition, with hundreds gathering to pay their respects to the revered queen mother.

All mourners and visitors desirous of filing past the queen mother’s body are expected to accord her the needed respect and dignity, while females are barred from wearing headgear and jewellery.

The burial service is scheduled to take place at the Manhyia Palace, with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, presiding over the final rites.

Meanwhile, residents have been urged to stay indoors throughout the night on Thursday, September 18, as Asantehemaa would be transported to Bantama Mausoleum (Ban mu), then to Breman Mausoleum for burial.

Similarly, mourners have been cautioned against taking photographs while filing past the remains of the Asantehemaa, noting that such an act would violate the customs and traditions of Asanteman.

The traditional council has warned that whoever would be caught defying the directive by taking videos and pictures of the Asantehemaa would be dealt with severely.
