Residents of Sefwi Afere in the Bodi District of the Western North Region have kicked against mining activities in their community, citing environmental destruction and threats to their livelihoods.

The residents, led by the chief, opinion leaders and concerned youth, have called on Nhyira Ba Mining Company Ltd to produce valid and legitimate documents before it is allowed to operate in the area. The call was made during a community dialogue held to address the issue.

Speaking to the media, the chief of Afere, Nana Yaw Nti II, warned that no mining company would be permitted to operate in the community without proper authorisation from the Minerals Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the traditional authorities.

According to Nana Yaw Nti II, the company first attempted to begin mining activities in the community ahead of the 2024 general elections. However, when the community demanded to see its operational documents, the company failed to present any.

Despite this, he alleged that the miners later gained access to the area and began operating at night without the knowledge or consent of community leaders.

“We will not allow any mining activity in this community until they present legitimate documents,” the chief stressed.

Some residents who spoke to the media backed the chief’s position, insisting they are determined to protect their land, water bodies and environment until the right procedures are followed.
