Former Member of Parliament for Adentan, Kojo Adu-Asare, has questioned why the Ministry of Education replaced a school placement system that was functioning effectively with a new one that appears to be causing problems.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Adu-Asare described the current situation as “embarrassing to government” and urged the Ministry to act swiftly to resolve the challenges and identify those responsible for alleged corrupt practices.
“Apparently, some people paid money and still couldn’t get placement. Those who paid should be bold enough to come out and mention names so we know what is really happening,” he said.
“We were using a system for school placement that had been working over the years, so challenges had been eliminated. I don’t think proper consultations went into introducing this new software, which is now bringing back problems that had already been fixed,” he added.
Mr. Adu-Asare’s comments follow revelations by Akrofuom MP, Joseph Azumah, that some individuals allegedly paid as much as GH¢30,000 to secure school placements for their wards, claims that have prompted the Ministry of Education to launch an urgent investigation.
In a statement signed by Deputy Minister Dr. Clement Apaak, the Ministry assured the public that it was treating the allegations with utmost seriousness and had referred the matter to National Security for investigation.
