Roads Ministry assures timely completion of Pokuase–Nsawam project

Pokuase–Nsawam Road works to be completed on schedule – Roads Ministry

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has given firm assurance that repair works on the Pokuase–Nsawam road will be completed on schedule, following the return of contractors to site after months of inactivity.

Construction had stalled due to delayed payments, but according to the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, a sum of GH¢809 million was released to the contractor on August 4, 2025, paving the way for the full resumption of work.

The development comes as a major relief to commuters who have endured weeks of heavy traffic along the stretch.

The resumption also came just ahead of the one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which had threatened to suspend operations if the government failed to act.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament on Wednesday, Deputy Roads Minister Alhassan Suhuyini apologised to motorists for the long delays.

“I will first of all apologise to all motorists on that stretch. It is one of the challenges we inherited at the Ministry. By the time we assumed office, the contractor—like many others—had abandoned site due to non-payment. We have since worked with the Finance Minister to secure funds to enable contractors to return to site,” he said.

Mr Suhuyini further assured that with payments made, the contractor is now fully mobilised and committed to staying on site until the project is completed.

“It is not going to be a nine-day wonder; he is back on site,” he stressed.
