Residents of Asante Akyem Bompata in the Asante Akyem South Municipality have vowed to resist any mining activities on their land, citing concerns over environmental destruction and social instability.
In an interview with Adom News, the residents expressed outrage over a renewed wave of illegal mining (galamsey) operations threatening their cocoa farms, water bodies, and livelihoods.
They warned that the mining activities pose a serious risk of water contamination, which could endanger their health and destroy farmlands that sustain the local economy.
The aggrieved residents staged a peaceful demonstration to voice their concerns, calling on authorities to intervene immediately. Joseph Baah, the convener of the group, urged the government and relevant agencies to take swift action to prevent further environmental damage.
Some residents also appealed directly to President John Mahama, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, seeking their intervention to safeguard the community’s land and resources for future generations.
