Reece James has committed his future to Chelsea by signing a new six-year contract.
The talismanic captain, whose last agreement ran to June 2028, will spend what should be the peak period of his career at Stamford Bridge.
James, 26, joined the club aged six and is now tied down until the summer of 2032 — in a deal that sees him align with the incentivised wage structure adopted since Chelsea’s May 2022 takeover.
Although his most recent extension happened under the current ownership, James was the final player still on terms from the previous era and this development ensures that will be rectified.
But the academy graduate is sure to be suitably rewarded for the key role he occupies, plus his faith in the west London side and their project.
The bond between James and Chelsea always made it likely that the relationship would continue, with talks concluded quickly over recent weeks.
It also means those widely viewed as Chelsea’s core men are all secured through at least 2030.
In the past, James has indicated he would be “happy” to spend the entirety of his on-field days with Chelsea and — apart from a 2018-19 loan at Wigan Athletic — that looks possible.
There are 225 appearances to his name so far, featuring 16 goals and 31 assists, while James inherited the armband following Cesar Azpilicueta’s departure in July 2023.
Five trophies have been lifted along the way; the 2021 Champions League, 2022 Super Cup and the Conference League three years later.
Fitness permitting, James appears to be emerging as first-choice right-back for England boss Thomas Tuchel ahead of the World Cup.
His minutes have required careful management, especially given the disruption of injuries, but he has made 35 appearances in all competitions.
Fifth in the Premier League at present, Chelsea host Newcastle United on Saturday. They then welcome Paris Saint-Germain for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, having lost the first leg 5-2 on Wednesday.
