The Kwabenya Circuit Court has granted bail to Godwin Asher, a 40-year-old preacher accused of incest and causing harm to his biological daughter.
Asher, who also works as a mason, was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢60,000 with three sureties. He is expected to reappear before the court on September 23, 2025.
Appearing with his counsel, Godfred Anim Darko, Asher pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Mr. Darko, renewing his bail application, argued that there was no sexual offence between Asher and his daughter. He said the accused was not a flight risk, had a fixed place of abode, and that “bail should not be used as punishment against the accused person.”
He further submitted that bail would enable Asher to prepare his defence and have access to legal counsel.
Inspector Diana Achana, who is leading the prosecution, left the decision to the discretion of the court. She told the court that the victim is currently residing with a relative at Pokuase, near Accra.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, a 64-year-old beautician and neighbour of the accused at Ashongman Estate, observed the victim bleeding from her right palm on August 2, 2025, and enquired about the cause.
The victim reportedly explained that she had gripped a cutlass in self-defence but sustained a deep wound to her hand when Asher forcefully pulled it from her during the alleged assault.
The complainant later assisted the victim to lodge a complaint with the police.
Investigations revealed that Asher had allegedly been engaging in sexual intercourse with the victim, with the last incident reported to have occurred on July 30, 2025.
A police medical form was issued, and the victim was examined and treated.
