Polls close in Akwatia By-election; counting underway

Polling has officially ended in the Akwatia constituency, bringing the much-anticipated by-election to a close.

The exercise, which began at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, was largely smooth, with the Electoral Commission (EC) confirming that all polling stations opened on time and were fully equipped with the necessary materials. More than 50,000 registered voters were expected to cast their ballots.

Security was tight throughout the day, with over 5,500 police officers deployed across the constituency. Agents from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and independent observers closely monitored the process.

The by-election is being contested by Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP.

Although polling was generally peaceful, isolated incidents occurred. Police arrested a man accused of tearing down campaign posters, and a confrontation at the Akwatia lorry station between NPP’s Alhaji Osman Masawudu and members of NDC Vice Chairman Chief Sofo Azorka’s escort was swiftly contained by security personnel.

Counting of votes has commenced at polling stations, and results will later be collated at the constituency centre.
