The Upper East Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into an armed robbery incident on the Zebilla–Widnaba road in the Bawku Division, which claimed the life of a police officer on duty.
Preliminary findings indicate that the incident occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, when two police officers travelling towards Zebilla encountered an armed robbery in progress along the stretch.
The robbers allegedly opened fire on the officers, during which one of them was struck by a bullet.
Following a distress call, a reinforcement police team was dispatched to the scene and rushed the injured officer to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for emergency medical attention. He was, however, pronounced dead on arrival.
The body of the deceased officer has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
In a statement, the Police Command said a special intelligence-led operation has been activated to track down and arrest all persons involved in the attack.
The Police assured the public that the perpetrators would be made to face the full rigours of the law and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that could aid the ongoing investigations.
