The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested seventy-seven (77) suspects during a targeted anti-drug operation conducted across the Tamale Metropolis and the Savelugu Municipality.
The exercise, carried out by the Command’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as Red Maria, forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on drug peddling and related criminal activities in the region.

According to a statement signed by Chief Inspector Luckman Niendow Alhassan, Northern Regional Public Relations Officer, on Tuesday, March 24, the operation was carried out on Monday, March 23, at about 21:30 GMT, involving a team of thirty-three personnel.

The statement noted that “the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on drug peddling and related criminal activities in the region.”
The operation began in Lamashegu, a location identified as a hotspot for drug-related activities, where one suspect was arrested.

The team then proceeded to the Aboabo market area, leading to the apprehension of another suspect who was found in possession of a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.
Police further indicated that intelligence-led efforts resulted in the arrest of an alleged supplier at NOBISCO. However, a search conducted at his residence did not yield any incriminating items.
