Police arrest 53-year-old man for threatening investigator with firearm

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 53-year-old man, Seth Welbeck, for allegedly threatening a police investigator with a firearm and unlawfully possessing a weapon and ammunition.

According to a police press release issued on February 7, the arrest followed an incident at the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, February 3, after the suspect appeared before the court in connection with a separate case involving alleged document forgery.

The Police said Mr Welbeck had been served with a criminal summons and duly appeared in court. After the proceedings, he was being escorted to the court cells when he requested permission to lock his vehicle.

During the process, the suspect allegedly retrieved a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition from his vehicle and pointed it at the investigator, threatening him.

The situation was swiftly brought under control as the investigator, with the assistance of other court officials and witnesses, disarmed the suspect.

Mr Welbeck is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and is expected to be arraigned before court to face the appropriate charges.

The Accra Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against acts of violence and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, noting that such actions pose a serious threat to lives and property.

The Police also urged the public to respect court procedures and cooperate fully with law enforcement officers, warning that any attempt to intimidate public officers or obstruct justice will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
