The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has launched the second phase of its Volta Press Centre project, marking another milestone in efforts to provide journalists in the two regions with a modern working environment.
The launch, held in Ho, brought together media practitioners, regional executives of the GJA, and stakeholders who pledged their support toward the completion of the centre.
Phase two of the project will focus on expanding office spaces, conference facilities, and resource rooms to enhance professional journalism practice in the region. Once completed, the centre is expected to serve as a hub for training, research, and press-related activities while also fostering collaboration among journalists.
Speaking at the event, Volta GJA Chairman, Harrison K. Belley, described the project as a “dream gradually becoming reality,” adding that the facility would not only raise the profile of the association but also provide a safe and enabling space for media work.
Mr. Belley noted that the project would ensure the sustainability of the Volta GJA and applauded the previous administration for working tirelessly to put up phase one of the facility.
He urged all members of the association in Volta to fully participate in ensuring that phase two is completed before May 3, 2026, when the World Press Freedom Day celebration will be marked. He also appealed to government agencies, corporate institutions, and individuals to support the initiative through funding and logistics.
Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, also commended the GJA for its vision, stressing the critical role of the media in promoting good governance, accountability, and development in the Volta regions.
“This is a great day as we begin the second phase of the Volta Press Centre. This centre is where the spirit of the press dwells—it represents our identity and legacy as journalists. We must all support this project to completion. I throw my full support behind it and entreat everyone to do the same so that the spirit of the media can have a permanent home and be properly recognized in the region,” he said.
Mr. Gunu backed his pledge with a donation of 100 bags of cement, a trip of chippings, sand, and GHC20,000, among other items, to support the project. He urged the GJA to ensure that the project is completed before World Press Freedom Day in 2026, so it can be commissioned as part of the celebration.
On his part, the immediate past Chairman of Volta GJA, Emmanuel Agbaxode, also pledged his support and appealed to members to show strong commitment to the project before seeking external assistance.
Other stakeholders, individuals, and corporate organisations have also pledged their backing for the timely completion of phase two of the Press Centre.
The Volta Press Centre project was initiated to give journalists a permanent home after years of operating without a central office. With phase two now underway, the association is optimistic about completing the project on schedule.
