Parliament presents 2025 Democracy Cup trophy to President Mahama

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, led a high-profile delegation to present the Democracy Cup trophy to President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House in Accra.

The ceremony was attended by key sports officials, including Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, National Sports Authority (NSA) Director Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, and representatives from Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics.

The second edition of the Democracy Cup is scheduled for September 5 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, where Accra Hearts of Oak will face Accra Great Olympics.

Launched in 2024, the Democracy Cup is a parliamentary initiative aimed at promoting civic engagement and national unity through football. The inaugural edition, held on July 17, 2024, saw Kumasi Asante Kotoko defeat Hearts of Oak 2-1 to lift the first-ever trophy.

Now a key fixture on Ghana’s football calendar, the Democracy Cup celebrates the country’s democratic achievements while highlighting the unifying power of sport.

According to the GFA, the winner of the 2025 edition will earn the opportunity to compete in a three-team tournament in the United States in May 2026.
