The Ghana Football Association has officially dismissed Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, bringing an end to his tenure after less than three years in charge.
The decision follows Ghana’s back-to-back defeats in their March international friendlies against Austria and Germany, results that appear to have accelerated the Association’s move to make a change ahead of a crucial period.
In a statement released on Monday, the FA confirmed the immediate nature of the decision, expressing appreciation for Addo’s service while signalling a new direction for the team.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.
“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course.”
Addo’s exit represents yet another shift in the Black Stars’ technical structure as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana, who are making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been drawn in a challenging group alongside England, Croatia and Panama for the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The 50-year-old recorded 8 wins and 9 defeats in 22 matches in charge of the Black Stars.
Mixed Results
Addo’s exit follows a turbulent second stint in charge. He was reappointed in March 2024, replacing Chris Hughton after Ghana’s early elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Despite guiding the Black Stars to qualification for the World Cup without defeat, his tenure was marred by inconsistency. Ghana endured a disastrous AFCON qualifying campaign, failing to win a single match and finishing bottom of their group, a run that intensified calls for his dismissal.
His record in friendly matches further compounded concerns, managing just two wins in 12 games.
With Addo now relieved of his duties, the GFA faces a critical decision in appointing a successor capable of restoring confidence and delivering results ahead of football’s biggest stage.
