The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has expressed concern over political interference in the operations of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), describing the institution as a target for politicians seeking to limit its work.

Speaking at the National Dialogue on the Focus of the Special Prosecutor on Tuesday, March 31, he credited the office’s continued existence to the support of President John Dramani Mahama, amid reports of a bill by the Majority in Parliament aimed at scrapping the institution. He noted that without such backing, the OSP could have been dismantled.

Mr. Agyebeng warned that politicians often see the OSP as “bad news” for their interests, making it a frequent target for attempts to undermine its authority. He stressed that this persistent threat highlights the need for strong support from civil society and the public.

He also called for constitutional safeguards to protect the independence and permanence of the office, emphasizing that its survival should not rely solely on the goodwill of any sitting President.

“We must build this office for the ages,” he said, “so that future Special Prosecutors do not spend most of their time fighting for survival instead of executing their mandate.”
