An accident occurred on Friday afternoon near the Ashaiman Overhead involving a Toyota V8 with registration number GN 76-16 and a commercial vehicle with registration number GS 3642-12.
Eyewitnesses reported that the collision took place during heavy traffic when a hearse carrying a deceased person, accompanied by a police escort, was driving at high speed through the area.
In an effort to make way for the ambulance, the Toyota V8, which was also said to be moving fast, crashed into the commercial vehicle before veering off the road and landing in a gutter.
The driver of the commercial vehicle, Frank Amoah, recounted that he had pulled over to allow the ambulance to pass when the Toyota V8 suddenly rammed into the rear of his vehicle. According to him, his mate sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical attention.
However, the driver of the Toyota V8 presented a different account. He claimed that one of the police escort motorbikes brushed against his vehicle while directing traffic, forcing him to swerve to avoid a more serious collision — a move that resulted in the crash.
It was later confirmed that the Toyota V8 involved in the incident belongs to Hassan Ayariga, founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC).
In an interview with Accra-based Citi News, Mr. Ayariga explained that he was on his way to attend an event when he was informed about the accident.
Both vehicles have since been towed from the scene. The police have launched an investigation to establish the exact sequence of events and determine responsibility for the crash.
