The President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Anhwiaso Traditional Area, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has praised Asante Gold Corporation for the progress made in the resettlement of Bibiani Old Town and Zongo communities, describing it as a major step toward improving residents’ lives.
He made the commendation during a grand ceremony marking the handover of a newly constructed school complex by Asante Gold Bibiani Limited to the Ghana Education Service. The facility forms part of the company’s ongoing resettlement programme for the two communities.
The new school, located at the resettlement site, includes a kindergarten, primary school, and junior high school, along with seven teacher accommodation units and a two-bedroom apartment for the headmaster. The school is expected to start operations at the beginning of the next academic term, replacing the current facility in Old Town.
At the ceremony, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II highlighted that the resettlement project represents a turning point for Bibiani, noting that previous mine owners had made similar promises but were unable to deliver. He commended Asante Gold for advancing the project and urged the company to maintain momentum until full resettlement is completed.
He emphasised that the early completion of the project is particularly crucial as blasting activities near the mine continue to affect daily life in Old Town and Zongo.
Dave Anthony, President and CEO of Asante Gold Corporation, expressed satisfaction with the progress, saying the school handover reflects the company’s commitment to the affected communities. He acknowledged that the project had faced delays but assured that work is now progressing steadily, with the first 100 housing units expected to be ready by June 2026. These units will facilitate the relocation of residents currently living too close to active mining operations.

Mr. Anthony stressed that the resettlement programme goes beyond relocating residents—it is about creating safer, improved living conditions and social infrastructure for present and future generations.
Samuel Kwesi Takyi, General Manager of Asante Gold Bibiani Limited, thanked all stakeholders, particularly the residents of Old Town and Zongo, for their patience and cooperation. He also called on the Ghana Education Service to ensure the proper use and maintenance of the new school and staff accommodations so the facility can serve the communities for years to come.
Representatives of the two communities welcomed the handover as a strong sign of progress, expressing hope that the pace of work would be sustained. They are optimistic that families will soon move into safer homes and begin a new chapter in a more secure and dignified environment.
