A mentally-ill pregnant woman in Ofankor has been reunited with her family and delivered safely after her plight was highlighted on Nhyira FM’s Obra Show.
The woman’s situation came to public attention when a Good Samaritan, Richla Gershin, encountered her in her ninth month of pregnancy and decided to help.
According to residents in the Ofankor area, “she was once a hawker but suffered an accident that resulted in memory loss.”
Comfort Afia, the name she quietly whispered to Richla when she was first rescued, also said she has a child who is currently living with her family in the Volta Region.
After airing her story, the Obra Show supported Richla with GH₵5,000 to take care of the pregnant woman and cover her maternity expenses. Richla had earlier reported the case to the police, who advised her to publicize it in order to trace the woman’s relatives and protect herself from any potential backlash after delivery.
The appeal worked. Following the broadcast, the woman’s family came forward, travelling from the Volta Region to Kumasi with Afia’s firstborn to see her.
Nhyira FM stepped in to facilitate her medical care and ensure she received the necessary support before delivery. She has since given birth, and both mother and baby are in good health.
Evangelist Degraft Addae, a regular panelist on the Obra Show, described the development as “a testimony of how media can be used to restore dignity and reunite families. This is more than a rescue; it is a redemption story.”
Lady Gold White, another contributor to the show, praised Richla’s selflessness, saying, “In a time when many would have walked away, she stepped forward. That is the true meaning of love for your neighbor.”
Gifty Donkor, popularly known as Big Mama, added, “This is why we say the Obra Show is more than just talk—it is about real action and real change. Today, a child has her mother back, and a family has been made whole again.”
Show host, Ohemaa Benewaa, commended Richla for her good heart, noting that “sometimes heroes don’t wear capes—they simply open their hearts.”
