NPP Secretary reacts to claims he sold state land to wife for GH₵2,000

The Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tema Central, Okwei Ian Tabalor, has refuted claims by the Tema Development Company (TDC) that he sold public land in Community 5 to his wife for GHS2,000.

TDC’s Managing Director, Courage Makafui Nunekpeku, alleged that the land, originally earmarked for a public toilet facility, was transferred to Mr. Tabalor’s wife.

He added that the parcel had since been reclaimed and that Mr. Tabalor’s contract with TDC was terminated following an internal probe.

But responding to the allegations in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Mr. Tabalor described the claims as baseless and unjust, stressing that he had no role in the allocation process.

“This was something my wife herself told me about. Her brother, Caleb Kisei, who once worked at TDC before travelling abroad, already had a plot in the same area, Community Five. He informed her that the adjacent plot was a commercial plot she could apply for. She went through the official process to apply for it. I had no involvement. I am a protocol officer, not a manager—I don’t handle land allocations,” he explained.

He further stated that the allocation and payment were processed by former TDC Estate Manager, Asare Darko.

“The allocation letter and the fee were approved by Mr. Asare Darko, who is still alive. My wife made the payment directly to TDC and later applied for a development permit at a cost of GHS4,600. She even secured an ETA permit. The plot, located in the commercial enclave of Community 5, measures 28 by 30 feet, as indicated on the site plan,” he said.

Mr. Tabalor emphasized that his responsibilities at TDC were limited strictly to protocol and events.

“My work focused on organizing events, coordinating meetings, managing institutional relations, and arranging facility tours for VIPs. I never had the authority to allocate land. For the Managing Director to accuse me of selling land to my wife is completely unfair,” he added.
