Tano North MP and spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has mounted a strong defence of the former Vice President, describing him as the party’s best chance to return to power.
Addressing delegates on Wednesday, October 15, Dr. Gideon Boako praised Dr Bawumia’s steadfast loyalty and commitment to the party, arguing that his service over the years distinguishes him from other contenders.
“When I look at Vice President Dr Bawumia and how well we have served the party, that’s the same way he has served the party. All the other colleagues have also served, but we in the NPP have seen something good in him,” he said.
Dr. Boako expressed concern that some party members had turned their backs on Dr Bawumia due to internal rivalry, even though he played a vital role during the party’s time in opposition.
“Isn’t it the same Bawumia whom we once regarded as our god when we were in opposition? Isn’t he the one? Back then, we looked up to Bawumia as our god. If he didn’t speak, it felt as though no one else in Ghana could speak on our behalf,” he said.
He dismissed criticisms blaming Dr Bawumia for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, insisting that the loss was not caused by him.
“We in the NPP know the reasons why Ghanaians voted against us. It wasn’t because of Bawumia. There’s nothing that shows that if any of those contesting against him were presented, they would have won,” he noted.
Responding to calls for Dr Bawumia to step aside because he lost in 2024, Dr Boako argued that such logic was flawed.
“Someone says Bawumia contested in 2024 and couldn’t win, so he should step aside. But that same person contested against him in 2023 and didn’t win either. So should he also not contest again?” he asked.
He called on delegates to rally behind Dr Bawumia, describing him as a tested and committed leader who can restore the NPP’s strength and lead it to victory in 2028.
