Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed allegations that he positioned himself near a polling booth in Winneba to influence voters during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing flagbearer contest.

In a statement issued on Saturday, January 31, Mr Afenyo-Markin described the claims as false and misleading, insisting that he fully complied with both Electoral Commission and party guidelines throughout the exercise.

“At no time have I been anywhere near the voting area as claimed, nor have I engaged in any conduct that could be construed, even remotely, as undue influence,” he stated.

The Effutu MP explained that his movements within the constituency were limited to casting his vote and carrying out lawful oversight duties in accordance with the rules governing the process.

According to him, the latest allegation forms part of what he described as a pattern of coordinated attempts by opponents to tarnish his image since the start of the flagbearer race.

Mr Afenyo-Markin cited an earlier incident following the signing of the NPP peace pact in Accra on January 22, 2026, where a video circulated online had been edited to suggest he deliberately refused to applaud a particular candidate.

“These vile tactics are as transparent as they are desperate,” he said.

The Minority Leader cautioned that the spread of misinformation during sensitive political exercises could erode public trust in the democratic process.

He called on the Electoral Commission, security agencies and political actors to safeguard peace, transparency and credibility throughout the contest.

“Crass fabrications such as these only seek to sow discord and undermine the integrity of our democracy,” he added, urging all stakeholders to allow the process to unfold freely and fairly.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also appealed to journalists and independent observers to verify developments on the ground in Winneba, noting that credible media coverage remains crucial in providing objective accounts from polling centres.
