Justin Frimpong Koduah ,NPP General Secretary

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Koduah, has commended the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission (EC) for their handling of the Akwatia by-election, describing the process as generally smooth and peaceful.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Koduah praised the police for their high visibility and professional conduct throughout the exercise. He noted that lessons appeared to have been learned from recent electoral disturbances in Ablekuma North.

“I commend the police in the Akwatia by-election. It seems they learned a lot from Ablekuma North, so the visibility was greater here. The body cams and professionalism in executing their duties ensured a smooth and peaceful election,” he said.

Turning to the Electoral Commission, he acknowledged its efforts to maintain transparency and credibility, pointing out that only a few isolated polling stations experienced challenges.

“The Electoral Commission also did all that they had to do except for one or two polling stations where there were issues, but overall, they did well,” Mr. Koduah added.

The Akwatia by-election, held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, followed the passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi. Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious with 18,199 votes. His closest rival, Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, polled 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) secured 82 votes. Out of 34,122 ballots cast, 33,819 were valid, with 303 rejected.

The outcome is seen as a notable gain for the NDC in a swing constituency, further intensifying political dynamics as the country approaches the 2028 general elections.
