The Member of Parliament for Nkwanta South in the Oti Region, Geoffrey Kini, has cautioned parents in Mafikope, a fishing community, against allowing their children to drop out of school to engage in fishing activities on the Volta Lake.
The MP expressed concern that many school-age children are involved in fishing, a situation he said threatens their education and long-term prospects. He stressed that every child has the right to education and urged parents to prioritise schooling as the surest path to a better future.
Geoffrey Kini made the call during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a three-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities aimed at enhancing teaching and learning in the community. He noted that since its establishment, Mafikope has seen little infrastructural development, a challenge that has negatively affected academic progress.
According to the MP, education remains the most effective tool to fight poverty in the area, adding that achieving this goal requires the collective effort of parents, community leaders, and government. He emphasised the need for modern educational facilities and pledged to support additional infrastructure projects to improve living standards in the constituency.
He further urged residents to continue supporting the president’s development agenda aimed at transforming the country.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing quality education through improved infrastructure, logistics, and teacher motivation. He appealed to community members to cooperate with the contractor to ensure the project is completed within the stipulated six months.
Residents of Mafikope, in an interview with Adom News, expressed gratitude to the MP and the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly for the classroom project. They said the lack of adequate school infrastructure has forced many children into fishing and expressed hope that the new facility will help keep pupils in school.
