The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South in the Oti Region, Joseph Antwi Awal, has inaugurated a 13-member Municipal Disaster Management Committee to strengthen disaster preparedness and response in the area.
Constituted under the National Disaster Management Organisation Act, 2016 (Act 927), the committee is mandated to provide policy direction, coordinate institutional efforts, and enhance the municipality’s resilience to disasters such as floods, fires, epidemics, conflicts, and other emergencies.
The committee will also oversee relief, rehabilitation, and recovery efforts, as well as mobilise financial and logistical support from both public and private sectors.
Speaking at the inauguration at the MCE’s office, Mr. Awal, who chairs the committee, said the initiative aligns with Ghana’s disaster risk management framework and highlighted the need for effective coordination at all levels. He expressed concern over the rising incidence of fire outbreaks and other emergencies, urging members to remain proactive and responsive.
He called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure a safe, resilient, and disaster-ready municipality.
Meanwhile, the Nkwanta South Municipal Director of NADMO, Bright Gesuokon, described the inauguration as a crucial step toward proactive, community-focused disaster management. He noted that the committee had not met since 2022, emphasizing the importance of its reactivation, and appealed to residents to support its work.
