The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, Joseph Antwi Awal, has donated GH¢5,000 in cash to all five registered teams ahead of the crucial 3rd Division League in Nkwanta, Oti Region.
The support aims to boost the teams’ morale and preparedness as they gear up for the important competition and to promote sporting activities in the area.
This gesture by the MCE will serve as a significant boost for the clubs at a critical time as the season begins.
Speaking with club coaches and owners from his office, he reiterated his ongoing commitment to sports development in the municipality, emphasizing that football remains a symbol of local pride and heritage.
According to the MCE, this initiative aligns with President John Mahama’s vision to promote youth involvement in sports.
As a former sports journalist and football enthusiast, he stressed the importance of supporting local youth.
He highlighted that Nkwanta South is known for nurturing football talents, mentioning players like Vincent Atinga, Emmanuel Keyeke (former Asante Kotoko player), Joseph Meriku (Legon Cities), among others, who started their careers in the area.
The MCE also announced that MP Geoffrey Kini has secured for the construction of a modern sports facility through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
Additionally, through the SOCO project, another facility will be built at Nkwanta English/Arabic Park, featuring a volleyball court, basketball court, handball, and other sporting disciplines for effective sporting events in the municipality.
He believes these facilities will create opportunities for local youth to discover and develop their talents.
He further shared that he is partnering with an Albanian 3rd Division team, which has agreed to establish a link program allowing some youth to travel abroad to develop their careers, urging players to demonstrate good moral discipline on the field.
The MCE urged the youth to use the 3rd Division games as a means to promote peace, noting that the government remains committed to ensuring lasting peace. Qualifying for the 2nd Division will open up economic opportunities, making it vital for everyone to support this initiative.
On behalf of the clubs, Ateku Raji Babana, Vice Chairman of the Nkwanta South Municipal Football Association, welcomed the donation, describing it as a sign of confidence in the teams’ ability to succeed and to promote football in the area.
He added that as anticipation grows ahead of the 3rd Division matches, the financial support will play a crucial role in motivating players to perform strongly.
The District Vice Chair acknowledged the MCE’s dedication, highlighting his passion for the game and its development.
