Former Defence Minister and Bimbilla MP, Dominic Nitiwul, has raised concerns about the criteria and funding surrounding the ongoing recruitment into Ghana’s security services.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he attributed the high number of applicants to recent policy changes, including an increase in the age limit and the removal of strict requirements for passes in both English and Mathematics.
According to him, these adjustments have significantly widened the pool of applicants, contributing to the large turnout being recorded.
Mr. Nitiwul also questioned the financial preparedness of the government, stating that there appears to be no clear budget allocation to cater for the additional 5,000 recruits.
He urged the Finance Minister to ensure adequate funding is provided to support the recruitment and training process.
“The significant numbers recorded in security service recruitment are largely due to the ten-year increase in the age limit that has been implemented. Additionally, there have been changes regarding the passing requirements in English and Mathematics. They have stated that passing either English or Mathematics is sufficient for recruitment. However, there is a current issue with budgeting for the additional 5,000 recruits.
“The Finance Minister needs to allocate funds for this purpose. This situation would not have occurred under the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as recruitment would have been planned more effectively without the need for forced increases,” he said.
While acknowledging that the increase in recruitment is positive for job creation, Mr. Nitiwul maintained that it remains insufficient to address youth unemployment, which he described as the biggest security threat facing the country.
