General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has expressed confidence that his party will win the Akwatia by-election, despite acknowledging the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the frontrunner.
Speaking to journalists at a polling centre on Tuesday, September 2, Mr. Kwetey noted that the NPP’s incumbency in the constituency naturally positions them as favourites.
“I would say the NPP were clearly holding the seat, so naturally they will be considered the favourite. But just as we did in the December 7 elections, where the NPP were favourites and we beat them, the same thing will happen here,” he stated.
He affirmed the NDC’s determination to reclaim the seat, declaring: “Akwatia will be green before we leave here today.”
Mr. Kwetey also dismissed the NPP’s withdrawal from the Tamale Central by-election as an act of goodwill, insisting it was a strategic move to avoid certain defeat.
“The truth is that the NPP knows they have no chance in Tamale Central. They can bring Dr. Bawumia; he will lose miserably. Their explanation was just a cover,” he argued.
According to Mr. Kwetey, the situation in Akwatia is different, as the NDC maintains it was the rightful winner of the constituency in the 2024 general election.
“Akwatia is a place we believe we won on December 7, but it was declared for them. This by-election gives the people of Akwatia an opportunity to make the final choice,” he added.
