National Sanitation Day to restore discipline – Local Gov’t Minister

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has pledged stricter enforcement and stronger accountability to address Ghana’s sanitation crisis.

This was at the relaunch of the National Sanitation Day held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Madina.

Mr. Ibrahim said the initiative will now be observed on the first Saturday of every month across all 16 regions and 261 districts.

He stressed that the programme is aimed at restoring discipline in public spaces, empowering local assemblies with sanitation as a key performance indicator, and mobilising citizens for collective action.

To ensure accountability, the Ministry announced measures including a dedicated sanitation hotline for reporting nuisances, a central dashboard to track district performance, and mandatory monthly reports from assemblies.

The Minister urged traditional leaders, religious groups, the youth, and the media to support the campaign.

“Let us embrace this initiative and together, we can build a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Ghana,” he said.
