The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed four striking university senior staff unions to immediately suspend their indefinite industrial action to allow for further negotiations over their grievances.
The unions involved are the Senior Staff Association–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG).
The strike notice prompted the commission to summon the unions and their employers to appear before it on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
At the hearing, only TUAAG was represented, with its Takoradi Local President and Accra Local Vice Chairman appearing on behalf of the National President. The three other unions—SSA-UoG, TEWU-TUC, and FUSSAG—failed to attend.
Officials from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) were present representing the employers.
During proceedings, TUAAG confirmed it was not participating in the strike despite being listed in the joint notice of action. Management, however, indicated that SSA-UoG had commenced an indefinite strike on February 3, with the other unions also participating.
Following deliberations, the NLC ordered all striking staff to call off the industrial action immediately, emphasising that the substantive issues in dispute cannot be addressed while the strike continues.
“The Commission hereby directs the striking workers to call off the ongoing strike with immediate effect to pave the way for further discussions on their issues. Until the strike is called off, the substantive issues cannot be heard,” the directive read.
The commission further instructed TUAAG to formally communicate in writing its disassociation from the strike if it is not participating.
The unions have been urged to comply with the directive to facilitate dialogue and resolve the dispute.
