National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Akrofuom, Joseph Azumah, has alleged that some staunch members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are currently lobbying to become the flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s, running mate for the 2028 elections.
According to him, the lobbyists include defeated aspirant and former NPP General Secretary, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, 2024 running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, and former Suame MP and Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu.
“Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Kwabena Agyapong, and Sarah Adwoa Safo are currently lobbying to become the running mate,” Joseph Azumah, who also doubles as a Member of Parliament’s Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources, claimed on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem hosted by Omanhene Kwabena Asante.
In a rebuttal, a political aide to the newly elected flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, described the claims as baseless and unsubstantiated.
He added that although the selection of a running mate is important, Dr. Bawumia’s current preoccupation is uniting the NPP after the primaries to ensure the party’s victory in the 2028 presidential elections.
Tonto further stated that the selection of the running mate will be done in consultation with the party leadership and major stakeholders within the party.
Former Vice President Dr. Bawumia was on Saturday elected as the NPP flagbearer ahead of the 2028 election, defeating four other contenders by 110,643 votes, representing 56.48%. Other contenders were Kennedy Ohene Agyapong with 46,554 votes (23.76%), Dr. Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53%), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1,999 votes (1.02%), and Kwabena Agyei Agyapong with 402 votes (0.2%).
