Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has paid glowing tribute to the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a foundational pillar in the history and growth of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Mr. Adams, although the late former First Lady eventually broke away from the NDC to form the National Democratic Party (NDP), her impact on the NDC’s formation and evolution remains unmatched.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, the Buem MP said Nana Konadu played a central role in shaping the NDC’s vision and identity alongside her husband, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
“President Rawlings was the founding father, and Nana Konadu, if there is anything to say, was the one who carried and birthed that party,” Mr. Adams said.
He emphasised that her contribution to the NDC was so significant that any honest account of the party’s history would be incomplete without her.
“You can say she’s more like the mother. You can’t write the history of the NDC and leave out Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. Then you haven’t talked about the NDC,” he stated.
Mr. Adams further highlighted how the late First Lady’s activism through the 31st December Women’s Movement inspired many Ghanaians to join and remain loyal to the NDC.
“There are people who are members of the NDC today because they believe that the party was birthed by her,” he said. “Even in my constituency, in Buem, there are people who are in the NDC because of the 31st December Women’s Movement and because of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.”
He added that despite her later political divergence, her influence continues to be felt deeply within the NDC.
“Even today, there are people in the NDC who are working for the party and doing everything for the NDC because of her,” Mr. Adams added.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, passed away on Thursday at the Ridge Hospital in Accra at age 76.
She served across both the military and civilian administrations of her husband, leaving behind a rich legacy in governance, women’s empowerment, and national development.
