The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has carried out a major dawn operation in Osino, located in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region, resulting in the arrest of 36 people suspected of engaging in illegal mining.
The raid, which took place on Saturday, November 8, 2025, is part of the government’s stepped-up efforts to curb illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to endanger Ghana’s rivers, forests, and environment.
Officials from NAIMOS reported that the group included 32 Nigerien nationals and four Ghanaians who were allegedly operating at different illegal mining sites in the area.
The arrests were made after a coordinated intelligence-led operation carried out by security officers in the early hours of the morning.
During the exercise, several pieces of equipment believed to have been used for the illegal mining activities were also confiscated.
The operation, according to NAIMOS, was the outcome of several weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering focused on the activities of foreign nationals involved in galamsey operations across the Eastern Region.
The suspects are expected to be handed over to the relevant authorities for further screening and investigation, with possible prosecution or repatriation depending on the outcome.
In a statement, NAIMOS reaffirmed its determination to sustain the national fight against illegal mining and warned that similar exercises would be intensified in other parts of the country. The Secretariat also appealed to local communities to support the ongoing efforts by providing reliable information to assist security agencies in tackling the menace.
