The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that a gas explosion at Gomoa Potsin Junction in the Central Region has been brought under control following a major early morning fire incident on Tuesday.

The explosion occurred around 5:50 a.m. when a Staroil fuel tanker carrying about 54,000 litres of petrol veered off the road and fell near a chop bar where there was an open flame. The impact triggered a massive fire, destroying several structures in the area.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), NADMO, and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) were deployed to the scene and successfully contained the blaze. The operation was led by Central Regional GNFS Commander ACFO Mary Attigah Mensah and Regional NADMO Director CDCO Emmanuel Kwesi Dawood Mensah.

According to NADMO Central, 11 people have been internally displaced, along with about 60 dependents, after their homes were either completely or partially destroyed.

Additionally, six first responders—four fire officers and two NADMO personnel—sustained injuries during efforts to contain the fire. They are currently receiving treatment at Potsin Polyclinic and the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.

Authorities have confirmed that traffic flow in the area has since been restored, and investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.
