A grieving mother from Kasoa, Abigail Nyamalor, has recounted the heartbreaking events leading to the death of her 22-year-old daughter, Priscilla, in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment stampede at El-Wak Stadium.
Two of the six deceased, including Priscilla, were from Kasoa.
Abigail revealed that Priscilla had informed her family before leaving home for the recruitment exercise on Wednesday morning.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, she recalled bidding her daughter farewell and assuring her that God would guide her.
The grieving mother said Priscilla later called to report that the venue was overcrowded.
“She told me there were a lot of people there, but I told her that God would be with her and guide her. Then she said she was going to switch off her phone, so I wouldn’t be able to reach her, but she promised she would come home safely,” Abigail recounted.
Panic set in when her calls began going unanswered.
“I tried calling her several times, but the calls wouldn’t go through. Eventually, a man answered, asking me to hold on, but no one spoke after that, so I hung up,” she said.
The horrifying truth came later.
“When I called again, I was told my daughter had fallen in the stampede and people had stepped on her. She was at the 37 Military Hospital,” Abigail said, breaking down in tears.
She added, “When we went to the mortuary, my daughter was there. I couldn’t find any of her belongings. She was only 22 years old.”
Apart from the six deaths, several others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital.
