The Upper Denkyira East Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) in the Central Region has intensified its enforcement drive against unlicensed motorcycles and tricycles.
In an operation carried out this week, authorities impounded a total of 72 vehicles — 59 motorbikes and 13 tricycles — for operating without proper registration, number plates, or safety helmets.
Upper Denkyira East Police Commander, DSP Simon Boavo, told Adom News that the crackdown follows a decision taken three months ago after extensive engagement with riders and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
He explained that the operation was necessary to restore order and ensure compliance with road safety regulations, warning that all seized vehicles will only be released upon presentation of valid documents. Riders who continue to flout the law will face prosecution.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) George Anane also appealed to commercial motorbike riders, popularly known as “okada” riders, to cooperate with authorities. He said riders facing genuine difficulties in registering their vehicles could seek assistance at his office.
The MCE further disclosed that the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Lawyer Emelia Ankomah, will provide free helmets to registered riders, stressing that only those complying with registration requirements will benefit from the initiative.
The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by the Municipal Security Council to promote safety and reduce lawlessness on the roads of Upper Denkyira East.
