The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has officially received the final report of the Gbeniyiri Mediation Committee set up to address tensions between the Lobi/Birifor and Gonja communities in the Savannah Region.
The committee, inaugurated in September 2025, was tasked with facilitating dialogue and fostering peaceful coexistence after renewed disturbances in sections of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.
Its findings are expected to provide a structured framework for rebuilding trust, promoting tolerance and securing sustainable peace in Gbinyiri and surrounding communities.
At a brief ceremony to receive the document, the Minister praised members of the committee for what he described as a careful and committed effort.
He assured that government would review the recommendations closely and take steps toward their implementation. He also acknowledged the contribution of development partners and called for continued cooperation to strengthen unity in the area.
The committee’s chairman, Emmanuel Bombande, expressed gratitude to John Dramani Mahama, the Interior Minister, the Overlord of Gonja and other stakeholders for their support throughout the mediation process.
He emphasised that achieving lasting peace demands patience, compromise and sustained engagement from all sides.
Mr Bombande further appealed to government to move swiftly in rolling out the committee’s proposals, including the establishment of a clear implementation plan and monitoring mechanism to ensure the recommendations lead to meaningful and enduring stability on the ground.
The Gbeniyiri conflict in August 2025 claimed the lives of about 38 people and left many others injured due to a disagreement over a ten-square-metre parcel of land.
Although the matter was brought before the Gbeniyiri chief’s palace, one of the parties rejected the ruling, triggering widespread clashes.
