Former Interior Minister and former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has expressed sympathy for his successor, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka over the pressures surrounding the ongoing security services recruitment exercise.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr Quartey said, “I feel for Muntaka. The seat you are on sometimes makes you feel pressured. I know what he is going through. I won’t do politics with it, and I won’t blame him because I have been there before.”

He urged compassion and prayers for Minister Muntaka, adding, “Let’s pray for him. What he is going through can even make you fall sick. He is currently the most unpopular man in his party.”

Mr Quartey, however, criticised party operatives for intensifying the pressure on the minister.

“I blame his party people who made the recruitment feel like we are going to war,” he stated.

He also raised concerns about the logistics of the exercise.

“During my time, we didn’t even sell forms for 350 cedis; it was under 100 cedis. The party people are pressuring him, and we have a big challenge when it comes to recruitment,” he added.

Highlighting the political significance of the recruitment, he said, “The recruitment is what brought them to power. But what happens to those who have paid the forms? That question must be answered.”

His comments follow Interior Minister, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka’s revelation that more than 105,000 applicants have progressed to the medical screening stage. Nearly 500,000 people applied, while the final recruitment target for the internal security agencies remains about 5,000 personnel.
