In total defiance of the ban on raw rubber exports imposed due to high local market demand, foreign exporters continue to export the commodity, causing concern among industry stakeholders.

Speaking in Parliament, Michael Baafi, Ranking Member of the Trade and Industry Committee and MP for New Juaben, said local industry players are suffering due to the current export practices.

He cited the Ghana Rubber Estate, which previously employed over 4,000 workers but now has about 3,000 employees, as an example of how the sector is shrinking. Baafi added that the negative impact of unrestricted exports extends beyond companies to farmers and other players along the value chain.

The MP criticized the Tree Crops Development Authority, suggesting that it seems to support exporters by allowing them to purchase rubber directly from farm gates, depriving local manufacturers of supply.

He warned that if this trend continues, it could significantly shrink the industry and harm the state’s economic interests. Baafi called on the Finance, Agriculture, and Trade Ministries to intervene and ensure the Tree Crops Development Authority protects local industry.
