The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has criticized the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the process as flawed and politically driven.
Speaking to journalists in Akwatia during Tuesday’s by-election, September 2, Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned why Justice Torkornoo was dismissed even though the Article 146 Committee reportedly concluded findings on only one of the three charges leveled against her.
“We are mourning democracy. You claim that you have charges against the Chief Justice — you are done with count one, you have counts two and three not concluded, and then you say you dismiss the person. That is the work of the Pwamang Committee? That is what Justice Pwamang did as a judge?” he asked.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the Chief Justice’s removal on Monday, September 1, through a statement issued by the Minister of Government Communications.
The decision followed the report of a five-member Article 146 Committee of Inquiry established to investigate three separate petitions calling for Justice Torkornoo’s removal. The committee was chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, with members including former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah of the University of Ghana.
