The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has toured the Weija Dam and the Weija Water Treatment Plant to assess operations at the facility and address concerns over increasing encroachment around the dam.
The visit formed part of the minister’s familiarisation tour of key water infrastructure facilities following his assumption of office.

During the inspection, officials of Ghana Water Limited took the minister and his team through various sections of the treatment plant and the dam, highlighting operational challenges as well as the growing threat posed by human activities and development close to the facility.
Engineers at the plant raised alarm over the rate of encroachment in the area, warning that it could compromise the safety and stability of the dam if not urgently addressed.

Production Manager for the ATMA Production Area, Ing. Dr. Hadisu Alhassan, explained that the dam holds a large volume of water and any structural failure could have catastrophic consequences for parts of Accra.
He cautioned that if the dam were to collapse, sections of the capital could be washed away due to the massive amount of water contained in the reservoir.
Speaking to the media after the tour, Mr Adjei acknowledged the concerns raised by engineers and assured management of Ghana Water Limited that the government will take steps to address the encroachment challenge.
He indicated that he will engage the Minister for Local Government to collaborate on measures to prevent further development around the dam and protect the facility.
The minister also expressed satisfaction with the progress of ongoing repair works at the treatment plant, which are expected to improve water supply and address shortages in parts of Accra and surrounding communities.
The tour underscores the government’s efforts to safeguard critical water infrastructure, ensure the safety of nearby communities, and strengthen water supply systems in the capital.
