The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has raised concerns over the alleged assault and detention of one of its members, Mr. Isaac Sakyi, a Medical Laboratory Scientist at St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital, Hwidiem, by military personnel during an operation in the area.
In a memorandum dated November 12, 2025, and signed by Dr. Cephas Kofi Akortor, General Secretary of MELPWU, the union described the incident as “unfortunate and troubling.”
Mr. Sakyi was reportedly on legitimate night duty when he was physically assaulted and detained by soldiers in the early hours of Wednesday.
MELPWU said it has begun engaging the Police, Hospital Management, and other relevant authorities to establish the facts of the incident and ensure justice and the safety of the affected member.
The union urged all members to remain calm as leadership works to address the matter and added that it may consider further action, including the withdrawal of services, if necessary.
“The union will communicate the next line of action, including the possible withdrawal of services, to seek justice for our member as soon as verified information becomes available,” the statement said.
The leadership further assured members of its commitment to pursuing justice and called for patience, solidarity, and cooperation during the ongoing investigations.
