Matriculation, Induction ceremony held for National Apprenticeship Programme beneficiaries in Ho

The government has launched the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, to equip young people with employable skills and sustainable job opportunities.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with key partners, will provide practical, technical, and vocational training to thousands of Ghanaians. Beneficiaries will be attached to master craftspersons and accredited institutions in fields such as carpentry, fashion design, hairdressing, welding, auto mechanics, and ICT.

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, speaking at the launch, described the programme as a bold step by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to address unemployment and the reality that many young people remain outside education, employment, or training.

“President Mahama and his administration see our youth not merely as statistics but as our nation’s most powerful asset. The apprenticeship programme is a central pillar in the government’s plan for a strong, skills-based economy. It was promised in our manifesto, and today we are delivering on that promise,” he said.

He explained that the programme would enroll 10,000 apprentices this year, with plans to expand to 100,000 annually by 2026. Backing this ambition, the 2025 national budget has earmarked GH¢300 million to cover free training, monthly stipends, and start-up tools to help beneficiaries build sustainable livelihoods.

Mr. Gunu further noted that beyond NAP, government is introducing several youth-focused policies, including the 24-hour economy, the National Coders Programme, and the Community Protection Assistance initiative under the Youth Employment Agency — all designed to prepare the youth for competitive opportunities.

Addressing beneficiaries directly, he urged: “This programme is your chance to gain practical, marketable skills that can transform your lives and communities. Dedicate yourselves fully to the training, respect your mentors, and remain disciplined. What you achieve here will shape the future of your families and our region.”

He stressed that the apprenticeship programme was not only about teaching trades but also about nurturing dreams, innovation, and the future pillars of Ghana’s economy.

CEO of the National Youth Authority and Deputy National Youth Organiser of the NDC, Osman Ayariga Esq., also praised the initiative, describing it as a bridge between classroom learning and the real needs of industry. He explained that trainees would not only acquire hands-on skills but also receive start-up support to establish their own businesses.

Regional and municipal leaders present at the launch hailed the programme as a timely intervention, noting that the Volta Region has a vibrant youth population eager to benefit from structured skill development opportunities.

Beneficiaries expressed excitement and gratitude, describing the initiative as a stepping stone toward self-reliance and economic empowerment.

The launch of the NAP forms part of government’s broader agenda to strengthen technical and vocational education and training (TVET), positioning it as a key driver of national growth.
