Police in the Eastern South Command have arrested a man identified as Coffie Agyemang for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1 million.

The suspect, a resident of Kwamang in the Denkyembour District, was picked up following an intelligence-led operation after police in Akwatia received information from concerned members of the public.

According to Accra-based Citi News, Coffie Agyemang had allegedly disclosed to an acquaintance his intention to sell the child due to financial difficulties. The information was subsequently relayed to the police, prompting surveillance on the suspect.

Investigators reportedly posed as interested buyers and engaged him in discussions, during which an alleged price of GH¢1 million was agreed. The suspect was arrested after he allegedly arrived at an agreed location with the child to finalise the transaction.

There are also allegations that the child may have been targeted for ritual purposes, with claims that the child’s body would later be returned to the suspect to create the impression that the child had died elsewhere. Police say these claims form part of ongoing investigations and have not yet been established.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Police Command, DSP David Fianko Okyere, said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and motives behind the act.

The child has since been placed under protective care, while the suspect remains in police custody to assist with investigations.
